INTERNSHIPS
AVAILABLE:
Nonprofit Technology/Social Change Web Development
Boston, MA
area
Organizers' Collaborative develops nonprofit technology resources and trains US-based social
change organizations in how to effectively use email, databases, and the Internet.
Most internships start in May/June, September, or January but we accept applications year-round.
They may last for any length of time, from two to nine months. Internships can be custom-designed
to cover multiple areas of interest.
All interns are also involved with general office tasks such as mailings and data entry.
Internship project areas:
- Spanish Translation:
Organizers' Collaborative is in the process of translating our web site, Organizers Database
software, and supporting materials into Spanish. OC is seeking a bilingual individual, with good
technology skills and who is comfortable in progressive nonprofit settings, to work on the Translation
Project. This includes translation of technical writing and web site content, providing assistance
to Spanish-speaking users of our software and resources, and testing the translated software.
- Desktop Software Development:
We are looking for people with some experience in Visual Basic, Kylix, wxWindows, Filemaker or
MySQL to help develop and improve user-friendly desktop applications for nonprofits and to streamline the process of installing the software.
- User Support/Training:
Can you explain technology to beginners in non-geek language? We need folks comfortable with
straddling the tech and nonprofit worlds, to provide technical support and training to users of
Organizers' Collaborative software. This may include responding to questions by email and phone,
visiting local non-profits to provide on-site assistance, organizing group trainings, and developing
case studies based on conversations with users.
- Event Organizing/ Development:
Learn to fundraise and you will never be unemployed! Organizers' Collaborative submits about 10
grant proposals a year and organizes several fundraising events, direct mailings and an annual
conference. For 2004 we are also planning our 1st annual dinner, and we seek an intern to help
organize this major fundraising event.
- Database Testing/Technical Writing:
Are you a detail-oriented person? Are you good at breaking tasks down into small steps? OC is
constantly updating our Organizers Database and we need folks to test for bugs, and write
procedures and descriptive instructions to update the user manual.
- Web Application/Software Development:
(significant programming experience required) If you have web development experience and
knowledge of Perl, PHP, JavaScript, Unix or HTML we can use your help in developing our national
directories of email lists and action ideas related to social change! We are also revamping our
main web site and need help with customized DRUPAL and PHP programming. We also work on Java and
Visual Basic desktop applications.
- Graphic Design:
Help produce artwork and graphics for our web sites: Democracygroups.org and Organizenow.net.
Also get involved in design work for brochures and publications. Experience using Photoshop,
Fireworks, Illustrator or Quark Xpress is helpful.
- RightWatch Email Lists:
Organizers' Collaborative maintains a resource web site that provides information and links on the
anti-democratic activities of Right-wing groups. The project disseminates critical and timely
information to progressives about their political opponents, as well as enhance collaboration
possibilities among groups monitoring the Right. Experience with email lists, web design, and
research are helpful.
- Office Management:
If you would like to work for a nonprofit some day, this internship provides experience with
bookkeeping, reporting and office organization. Learn what it takes to keep a small organization
running!
To apply:
Please submit a brief cover letter and a resumé to the Director of Programs and Training, at
least 3 weeks (6 weeks for summer positions) before you would like to start. Your letter should
specify how many hours per week you would like to work over what period of time. Please also
